FAQ
Does the camera still work like normal?
Yes, the camera operates exactly the same as an unmodified Sony FX3
Is there any colour cast shooting in ultraviolet?
Yes. Ultraviolet will have a heavy purple or violet colour cast that will need to be compensated for as best as possible with the white balance in camera, and then with post-processing in the grade.
Which wavelengths can the camera see?
Unmodified cameras can only see what our eyes see – from about 400 to 700 nanometres.
The full spectrum modification expands the visible range in both directions. The camera itself is sensitive to light from around 250nm in the ultraviolet spectrum, all the way to 1000nm and above in the infrared spectrum.
However, the viewable spectrum in ultraviolet is limited by the transmission of both the UV bandpass filter and the UV lens. The complete UV camera package is sensitive to wavelengths between 315-400nm.
How do I film in ultraviolet?
Without the right equipment, filming in ultraviolet is notoriously difficult. Visible and infrared light totally overpowers the UV output from the sun, so it’s necessary to use specialist filters to block all other wavelengths.
Most lenses are also designed to block UV and lenses that transmit UV wavelengths are very rare.
This camera package includes both the filter and lens necessary to view the world in ultraviolet, however it can still be tricky to get a good exposure. Even in direct sunlight, expect to crank up the camera’s ISO much higher than usual.
Do you supply ultraviolet lighting?
This camera package includes a 5W 365nm ultraviolet torch. Even though this is only just in the UVA spectrum, the torch still outputs some light in the visible spectrum and therefore the torch’s beam is still visible to the eye.
Also included are two pairs of UV blocking safety glasses – we highly recommend their use with the torch as UV lighting can damage eyesight or even blind.
Which lenses can I use?
Filming or photographing in ultraviolet requires lenses that transmit UV wavelengths. Whilst it is possible to mount other lenses on this camera setup, almost all lenses are designed to block UV wavelengths and they would there therefore almost certainly appear opaque to UV.
We supply a Prinz Galaxy 35mm f/3.5 lens with this camera package, one of the very few lenses capable of UV transmission. Other lenses may be available on request, however due to their extreme rarity they will be much more expensive.
